Why do a Triathlon?
Triathlon is the fastest-growing sport in the UK and consists, as the name would suggest, of three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running. Triathlons are a great celebration of living an active, fit and healthy lifestyle, and the origins of triathlon can be traced as far back as 1920.
Triathlon events come in different distances. From Sprint (swim 750m, bike 20km, run 5km) to Iron Man (swim 3.8 km, bike 180 km, run 42.2 km)
It is important to note that there is a different technique required by each discipline when they are combined compared to when they are performed individually. When swimming, for example, triathletes must work their lower body less energetically than normal so as to conserve leg muscles for the vigorous workout they will subsequently receive while cycling and running. Not only that, but triathlons are usually held in open water (ie lakes, rivers and oceans) as opposed to swimming pools, and practice is important to learn different techniques such as "sighting" (lifting the head to look for course-markers) and "dolphin kicking" (diving to make headway against waves).
A triathlon requires more kit than many other sports, as you need a fast bicycle, a suitable wetsuit and goggles as well as running gear. To find your local club try the British Triathlon Federation.
Benefits
All the benefits of cycling , running and swimming combined in your regime.
Training for a triathlon has the benefit of preventing you overtraining in any single discipline which might be the case if you focussed solely on running or swimming for example.
Running helps develop long, lean muscles; swimming helps to sculpt your upper body; and cycling helps tone your lower body.
Your energy will soar once you start training as a triathlete. The training will replenish your body and over time you will eventually have more energy throughout your day. However, it is important to follow a specific training program properly and keep at your own level
What should I wear to train for a Triathlon?
The highest impact activity in triathlon is running so start with the correct trainers for your feet and style of running. There are three types of trainer that may be applicable to you, structured, cushioned and max support. In store we analyse the arch of your foot and your pronation pattern in a quick process with specialised equipment. Both of these factors have a direct relationship to how you run and determine what type of footwear is best suited to you, and your running regime. A luxury for race day is cycling trainers.
Once you have the correct footwear it is imperative that you choose the correct sports bra. Once again we work in store to ensure your individual needs are met in relation to the fit which is extremely important. We stock a range of compression and encapsulation bras, to ensure your best fit. It is vital that when exercising your breasts are supported and held firmly in place, wearing a sports bra during your workout will reduce detrimental movement by 74%.
Initially use your existing bike it could be a mountain bike ( MTB ) or a road bike, before you buy a racing bike.
Helmets are compulsory so buy one and ALWAYS wear one.
Try or hire a wetsuit before you buy one. The race organiser usually provides swim caps although we recommend your own. Goggles need to be comfortable to wear and have a good range of vision, in various light conditions. i.e., dark early mornings - moderate sunshine or bright sunshine.
